Situation Awareness webcast

As you might know, I was on Hans Meyer's Situation Awareness radio program this past Saturday talking about Carnival of the Liberals. If you couldn't tune in you can listen to the show on the Free World Radio Network's site or (hopefully if the embedding works) with the widget to the left.

As always, I really enjoy doing these sorts of things, and besides, it got Hans to volunteer to host Carnival of the Liberals! I think I'm becoming more comfortable talking extemporaneonously although I've got to relax more (if only to get rid of that high pitched edge to my voice). Perhaps in the future, if I ever get my act together, I'll start my own skepticism podcast. Although, I've got to say, Brian Dunning's Skeptoid would be hard to beat.

In any case, thanks go to Hans, FWRN, and Blogtalk Radio. I look forward to doing the show again sometime.

It's Year Two! And Carnival of the Liberals #28.

Grrlscientist has posted the very first edition of the second year of Carnival of the Liberals at Living the Scientific Life. OK, so it's actually the second edition of the second year but last time we had our anniversary edition so that doesn't count. And after doing this for over a year now I think I've earned the right to say that these little introductory posts are a bear to write! Seriously, every single time there's just so much great writing and, really, there's only a limited number of superlatives in the English language... You see my dilemma don't you? Fine, fine, ignore me. But go read Carnival of the Liberals #28.
Next up is Daylight Atheism returning to host CotL for the second time on January 3, 2007. Happy holidays (hah! take that Bill O'Reilly!) and a joyous New Year everyone.

A brief word of thanks

I just wanted to take a little time and thank everyone who helped promote yesterday's First Anniversary Edition of Carnival of the Liberals but especially the following bloggers who gave us the best advertising possible -- they posted about it on their blogs. I'm sure the following list is incomplete, but these are the blogs of which Technorati knows. If I've missed anybody please let me know and I'll be sure to add to the list. So... In no particular order, special thanks go out to:

Thanks again everybody and let's make 2007 even better than 2006! And on that topic I'll have more to say in a few days if I can get my ducks properly aligned (they'd rather be in Florida).

CotL #27: First Anniversary Edition

Well, it seems like a year has passed just since I started work on the First Anniversary Edition of Carnival of the Liberals last night. Once again I'm overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of quality writing from a liberal perspective. For CotL #27 we had over 40 submissions and making a decision on which 10 to go with was not an easy one. In the end I decided to go with posts that touched on big picture issues in one way or another. But why read my excessive verbage here, when you can read it at Neural Gourmet?

CotL #25: The Meta-Political Edition

Oh frabjus day! Calloo callay! Yes gang, I'm chortling in joy too. And are all my liberal blogging friends feeling beamish? What a night! And the beauteous news just keeps coming. As I type this, CNN is reporting the Democrats now have the Senate 50-49 and might just sneak in that one last seat too, plus Rumsfeld has stepped down. Can it get any better than this?

It can! Because Carnival of the Liberals #25: The Meta-Political Edition is here. Richard at Philosophy, et cetera brings us 10 shining examples of high level political thinking. I'm always worried that these narrowly themed editions won't attract very many submissions, and I'm always wrong. What's more, the submissions continually exceed my expectations in terms of quality and thoughtful analysis. So thanks everyone who helps make CotL a success by going the extra mile with the posts they send in.

Need your poetry for CotL #19

Well, I’ve been hyping it for weeks and now it’s time. Carnival of the Liberals #19 is coming up on Wednesday, August 16th and it’s our special parody poetry edition. So I hope you all have been feeling creative! Aaron’s posted his call for submissions over at One Flew East and you can get the lowdown from him. Just so we’re all on the same page though, the deadline is Monday, August 14th by 8PM EST.

Important Announcement: Submissions

Spammers have found a way to use our webform for submissions on our website to do their evil deeds. Now while the e-mail from this form only goes to myself and the host of the upcoming CotL edition, it’s still damn annoying and not fair to the hosts.

So, as of now, please do not use the webform on the Carnival of the Liberals site. If you do, your entry will not be received. Until I figure out how to spamproof our webform, please use our blogcarnival.com form instead, or send me an e-mail directly to cotl DASH submissions AT carnivaloftheliberals DOT com. Of course, you know to replace the all-caps words with their symbols.

Call for subs for Carnival of the Liberals #15

Some logistical issues caused a bit of a delay and resulted in The Uncredible Hallq swapping hosting slots with Varkam at Neural Gourmet. Varkam will be hosting Carnival of the Liberals #15 on Wednesday, June 21st and and the deadline is Tuesday, June 20th by 7PM EDT. So, what are you waiting for? Get to sending in those submissions!

Note: Anyone who sent in something prior to this message, there’s no need to resend it. Varkam has a copy of everybody’s submissions thus far.

Call out for posts for CotL #10

It’s that time. Carnival of the Liberals #10 will be held on Wednesday, April 12th over at Pharyngula. There’s no particular theme this time around but here’s what PZ Myers has to say:

You can guess what I like: uncompromising liberalism. Strong words. No apologies. Secularism (Steven Waldman and Amy Sullivan need not bother sending me anything, but that does not preclude Christian contributors). I’ll look especially favorably on anything about science and science policy.

And that’s the way we like it! No apologies indeed. Liberalism is something to be proud of.

In any event, PZ needs your submissions by  Tuesday, April 11th. He didn’t give a specific time so I assume he’s somewhat flexible but putting together Carnival of the Liberals is time consuming because it is a selective blog carnival, so be kind. The earlier the better.

That Old Tyme Liberal Carnivaling Callout

It’s time to start thinking about sending in your latest and greatest for the 9th edition of Carnival of the Liberals to be held at About.Atheism.com, hosted by the ever gracious Austin Cline on Wednesday, March 29th. That’s next week, donchaknow. Austin needs the goods by Monday, March 27th at 6PM EST though. The only catch — oh yes, there’s a catch — is that your posts should concentrate on issues pertaining to religion and liberal politics. Here’s what Austin has to say on the subject: [...]

Last call for CotL #7

A brief reminder: The next Carnival of the Liberals is just a little under a week away on Wednesday, March 1 over at Throw Away Your TV. Jeff is going to need your best liberal blogging by noon on Monday, February 27 though. TAYTV is a video blog, so why not add some video to your entries? Jeff shows you how easy it is.

Special Note: Carnival of German American Relations

Carnival of German American Relations logoThere’s a new blog carnival in town. The Carnival of German American Relations was started by Joerg Wolf of Atlantic Review, whom we know as a friend and contributor to Carnival of the Liberals. Hey Joerg! When’re you going to host Carnival of the Liberals!?

They’ve already got their first edition under their belt and the second one is on the way, scheduled for March 11th at both Atlantic Review and the German blog Statler and Waldorf. Submitting couldn’t be easier – all you’ve got to do is ping the special trackback URL Joerg has set up and your entry will automatically appear on the CoGAR page, or if your blogging platform supports automatic trackbacks just link the phrase "Submitted to the Carnival of German American Relations" in your post.

CoGAR is another selective blog carnival though, which means that the carnival host determines which submissions appear in the actual carnival. While some might criticize this decision I think it makes a lot of sense. It exposes new or casual readers to the absolute best within a certain field and helps differentiate a carnival from all the other carnivals out there.

So fire up your keyboards and write that masterpiece of transatlantic political, social or cultural analysis that you’ve been meaning to get to for months, because now that the Carnival of German American Relations is here you don’t have any excuse to delay.

Last call for CotL#6

A brief reminder that Carnival of the Liberals #6 is coming up on us fast. CotL#6 is being hosted by Kevin Andre Elliot over at Slant Truth this week, Wednesday, Feb. 15th. Kevin needs all posts intended for CotL #6 to be in by 10:00PM EDT on Tuesday, Feb. 14th. Also, Kevin is challenging everyone to submit posts on some specific topics:

  • Progressive politics? What do we mean?
  • Homophobia and the Black (or any other minority) Community.
  • Can art be political, and if so is it still art?

It'd be great to see a lot of posts address these interesting, and timely topics but any great blog post on liberalism, or from a liberal perspective is welcome.

And we're back...

My apologies for the downtime everyone. Seems like I screwed something up. I restored the site from backup, no data was lost. Normality, or what passes for normality around here, has been restored.
